In Numbers 22, Balak, king of Moab pays Balaam to curse the Israelites, "Please come an put a curse on these people for me because they are more powerful than I am. I may be able to defeat them and drive them out of the land." (22:6)

The LORD prohibits Balaam from pronouncing a curse and instead in four “oracles” pronounces a blessing on Israel. Balak frustrated with Balaam inquires, “What have you done to me?”… “I brought you to curse my enemies, but look, you have only blessed them!” (23:11)

Balaam, rightly declares of God, “God is not a man who lies, or a son of man who changes His mind.” (Numbers 23:19) Balaam ends his third oracle with these words, “Those who bless you (Israel) will be blessed, and those who curse you will be cursed.” (24:9b) This is exactly the promise God made to Israel in the Abrahamic covenant (Genesis 12:3).

God is not coerced and cannot be bribed.

He fulfills His covenants.

God does not lie. God keeps His promises.

On Sunday many resolved to trust the promise of Philippians 1:6, “I am sure of this, that He who started a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” Be encouraged. God is commited to your growth in Him. The good work God began in you, He will complete. You have His Word.

“We all, with unveiled faces, are looking as in a mirror at the glory of the Lord and are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory; this is from the Lord who is the Spirit.” 2 Corinthians 3:18 (HCSB)

When the apostle Paul here describes us as having “unveiled faces” he is comparing the experience of our relationship with God to that of Moses. (Exodus 33:11) In Exodus 34:29-35 Moses encountered God on Mount Sinai where he received the Ten Commandments written on two stone tablets.

As Moses descended from Mount Sinai—with the two tablets of the testimony in his hands as he descended the mountain—he did not realize that the skin of his face shone as a result of his speaking with the LORD. When Aaron and all the Israelites saw Moses, the skin of his face shone! They were afraid to come near him. But Moses called out to them, so Aaron and all the leaders of the community returned to him, and Moses spoke to them. Afterward all the Israelites came near, and he commanded them to do everything the LORD had told him on Mount Sinai. When Moses had finished speaking with them, he put a veil over his face. But whenever Moses went before the LORD to speak with Him, he would remove the veil until he came out. After he came out, he would tell the Israelites what he had been commanded, and the Israelites would see that Moses’ face was radiant. Then Moses would put the veil over his face again until he went to speak with the LORD. (HCSB)

What caused Moses’ face to become radiant? What changes did this bring about in his life and ministry?

2 Corinthians 3:18 makes the point that because of Christ we can approach God with “unveiled faces.” When Moses entered God’s presence he removed his veil. Why is this significant?

What does it look like for us to “mirror” the glory of the Lord in our everyday lives?

In 2 Corinthians 3:18, the phrase “being transformed” is in the passive tense indicating that God is the One who brings about this transformation. Why is it important to our understanding of spiritual growth?

Throughout the book of Acts the word “strengthen” is used to describe spiritual growth, for example, “He (Paul) traveled through Syria and Cilicia, strengthening the churches.” (Acts 15:41) To strengthen or strengthening is the Greek verb, “epistērizō”. The noun, “epistolē”, or English, “epistle” used to refer to the letters in the New Testament. How were believers strengthened in the following verses?

ClubJAM Family Carnival Night, Feb. 22, 2012

My family has a great time last night at Club Jam's Family Carnival. The night kicked off with family worship and the video lesson, The Ultimate Challenge. I'm glad so many parents took this opportunity to experience this night with their sons and daughters. THANK YOU Karen Bottari, Carol Finlayson and the Club Jam Team for an excellent night. You rock!

Parents, here are some discussion questions that will help you follow-up with the video lesson.

--How does loving others deeply and honoring others more than ourselves show others who God is? (Romans 12:10)
--Would your life look any different if you truly lived like God was your only audience?

More thoughts on belonging

Yesterday we examined some of the implications of being “called to belong to Jesus Christ” and “In Christ we, though many, form one body and each member belongs to all the others” Romans 1:6 and12:5 (NIV).

We belong to Christ. 1 Corinthians 6:20
We belong to the church. Ephesians 4:4-6
We belong to a local church. Romans 12:5

The concept of belonging is not exclusive to the New Testament. In Leviticus 22:33 God informs His people, “I am Yahweh who sets you apart, the One who brought you out of the land of Egypt to be your God; I am Yahweh.” In other words, “I rescued you from slavery in Egypt, you now belong to Me.”

In Christ, we have been rescued from much more than physical slavery. Apart from Christ, we are slaves to sin (John 8:34 & Romans 6:20); enemies of God, having the devil as our father (John 8:44). Christ has liberated us from our sin (Romans 6:22) and rescued us from bondage (1 Peter 3:19). Therefore, as 1 Corinthians 6:20 declares, “for you were bought at a price. Therefore glorify God in your body (and in your spirit for you belong to God).”

Acts 9:2 describes the church as those who “belonged to the Way.” Romans 12:5 declares, “So in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others.” (NIV) According to the following scriptures, what are some of the implications of us belonging to Christ and each other?

In order to fully embrace the biblical call to belong to one another, four choices must be made. Take time this week to evaluate your commitment to belong. What steps is the Holy Spirit prompting you to take in order to experience a deeper sense of belonging?

1. I choose to do life with others—using my gifts to serve and receive the blessing of being served. (Ecclesiastes 4:12)
2. I choose to live authentically, allowing others to see my strengths and weaknesses. (Romans 12:3)
3. I choose to commit for the long haul, rather than settling for “relational shortcuts.” (Ephesians 4:2)
4. I choose growth over comfort. (2 Corinthians 7:9)

Upward Basketball-- Weeks 2 & 3

This weekend we're half-way through the 2012 Upward Basketball season. God is doing great things in the lives of children and families through this ministry. Pray for God's grace and endurance on all our Upward coaches,referees and leaders.

Pray also for the spiritual impact of the weekly practice devotions. Here's a sample devotional taken from the Coach's playbook:

Verse: Zephaniah 3:17, "The Lord your God is with you... He will take great delight in you." (NIV)

-- Review this verse several times with your players.

-- This week's mystery word is "DELIGHT."

-- Ask, "What are some ways that your family celebrates special occasions? How do you celebrate birthdays? Do you celebrate when someone accomplishes something terrific?"

What sort of things do we celebrate as a basketball team? (winning a game; scoring points, make a good pass or rebound...")

What kind of things causes God to celebrate? Is He pleased when you get an "A" on your report card? Is He happy when you win a contest? Does He rejoice when we win our basketball game?

While those things are all very nice at the moment, God celebrates most when we do things taht have a long term impact and put others first. What if you told the truth, even when it's easier to lie? What if you showed forgiveness to a friend? Those are the things that make God celebrate! God is pleased when you make right choices-- even when it's something very small.

Look back over Paul’s first missionary journey (Acts 13:1-14:28). What stands out to you as major successes? What setbacks do you observe?

In Titus 1:5 Paul instructs Titus, “The reason I left you in Crete was to set right what was left undone and, as I directed you, to appoint elders in every town.” In Acts 14:23, before returning to Antioch, Paul and Barnabas “appoint elders in every church.” What are the biblical qualifications for an elder (overseer or pastor) given in the following scriptures?

Titus 1:6-9—

1 Peter 5:1-4—

Acts 14:27 states that when Paul and Barnabas returned to Antioch they “rehearsed all that God had done with them and opened the door of faith unto the Gentiles” (KJV). Why is it important for us to “rehearse” what God has done? (See also Luke 10:17-18; and Psalm 103:2).

Take some time now to rehearse what God had done in your life and family.

In his book Wild at Heart John Eldredge poses the question asked by many women in the church, “Where are all the real men?”Eldredge’s response is simply, “Why you’ve asked them to become women.”

My life has been enriched by older "real" men who have mentored and discipled me. Last week I spent some time catching up with my high school pastor, Dennis Boel. I shared with him my first year ministry experiences at NMBC and updated him on my family. Our conversation ended with him praying for me over the phone. I hung up with a renewed awareness of God’s many blessings in my life and greater boldness for ministry. I experienced again the truth of James 5:16, “The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much.” (NAS)

Listen to this recent message by John Piper given at the Desiring God 2012 Conference for Pastors entitled, “The Frank and Manly Mr. Ryle” — The Value of a Masculine Ministry. The final point in Piper's message is, "A masculine ministry models for the church the protection, nourishing, and cherishing of a wife and children as part of the high calling of leadership." Whatever personal fulfillment we receive from the pursuit of our masculine call, our greatest motivation is the fulfillment of our duty to protect and provide for those God has entrusted to our care. Finishing Strong

Giants’ fans, rightly so, will talk about Mario Manningham’s catch for a long time to come. For most of us what makes the catch memorable is that the Giants finished well and won the game. If the Giants had lost Manningham’s catch would likely only be remembered by a few diehard fans and analysts. Great plays only count when you finish well.

In 2 Timothy 4:7-8 the apostle Paul writes, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. There is reserved for me in the future the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give me on that day, and not only to me, but to all those who have loved His appearing.” Paul’s life and ministry is filled with great achievements for the advance of the gospel. His legacy however, is great because he finished well.

This Sunday we’ll explore examples of finishing well from the report Paul gives of his first missionary journey in Acts 14:21-28.

Acts 14:8-20 Questions for Discussion and Reflection

In 1 Corinthians 15:8 the apostle Paul writes, “And last of all He (the resurrected Jesus) was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time.” The other apostles spent time with Jesus immediately after His resurrection (Matthew 28, Mark 16, Luke 24, John 21 and Acts 1). Paul did not encounter Jesus until the Demascus Road in Acts 9, between 33 and 36 A.D. In Luke’s account of Paul’s first missionary journey (Acts 13:4-14:20) he emphasizes some similarities Paul’s ministry shared with that of Jesus and Paul. What might have been Luke’s reason for doing this?

Read Acts 13:4-14:20. What are some of the similarities between Paul’s ministry and the ministries of Jesus and Peter?

Contrast Herod’s response to the worship of the crowds with that of Paul and Barnabas Acts 12:21-23 with Acts 14:15-17.

The culture encountered by Paul and Barnabas was made up of many different superstitions and religious ideas. After the lame man was healed the crowds referred to Paul and Barnabas as “gods” (Acts 13:11-12). Paul called on the crowd to repent, and “turn from these worthless things to the living God” (Acts 14:15). In essence Paul was calling their god’s Zeus and Hermes worthless idols. What are some of the idols worshiped in our culture?

Upward Basketball at NMBC, Week 1

This past weekend, January 27-28 Upward Basketball hosted its first games of the season! 349 players and their families piled into the Family Ministry Center Friday night and Saturday. Each game began with prayer and paused during half-time for a short message from the Bible lead by Steve Colantino. There are still opportunities for you to serve.

Games are every Friday 8:00 to 9:00 PM and Saturday 8:00 AM to 6:20 PM now through March 17th. Needed:

Bagel preparer—pick up 3 dozen bagels early Saturday morning and prepare them with butter and cream cheese. Wrap and drop them off at the FMC by 8:00 AM.

Yesterday I took my daughter Cassidy to the presentation, "Dinosaurs, Genesis and the Gospel." We both had a great time and learned much. At the dinner table we shared the short rhyme we learned that morning, marveling at God's amazing creation, “It’s designed to do what it does do and what it does do it does do well doesn’t it, don’t you think? I think it does, do you, I do, hope you do too, do you?”

Acts 13:13 - 14:7 Questions for Discussion and Reflection

Acts 13:5 reads, “Arriving in Salamis, they proclaimed God’s message in the Jewish synagogues.” Paul’s message in Acts 14:16-41 is given in response to an invitation by the leaders of the synagogue in Antioch of Pisdia. What are some reasons for their Paul and Barnabas beginning their ministry in the synagogue? What light does this shed on Paul’s affirmation in Romans 1:16 that the power of God is revealed “first to the Jew, and also to the Greek?”

Paul’s message in Acts 13 can be divided into two sections: verses 16:25 and 26-41. Beginning each Paul calls for the attention of his hearers, “Men of Israel, and you who fear God, listen!” and Brothers, sons of Abraham’s race, and those among you who fear God…” What is the main point of each section?

Romans 4:25 declares that Jesus was “raised for our justification.” According to Acts 13:38-39, what does Jesus’ resurrection guarantee?

Look ahead to Acts 14:26-28 where Paul and Barnabas give to the Antioch church about the results of their missionary work. What impresses you about their report?

Acts 14:7 concludes, “And there they kept evangelizing.” To whom and where is the Holy Spirit promoting you to share the gospel? Where in your sphere of influence is God “opening a door” for you to spread His message?

Christian Response to NJ's S-1 Same-Sex Marriage Bill

Yesterday the New Jersey legislature’s judiciary committee heard testimony and passed a bill to legalize same sex marriage in New Jersey. The bill, entitled “Marriage Equality and Religious Exemption Act”, will be read again before going to a vote in the State Assembly and Senate.

Marriage between one man and one woman is much more than a cultural or religious tradition. Marriage was created by God and woven into His created order. Genesis 2:23-24 reads, “This one, at last is bone of by bone and flesh of my flesh; this one will be called ‘woman,’ because she was taken from man. This is why a man leaves his father and mother and bonds with his wife, and they become one flesh.” This is why the Bible describes such behavior as “exchanging the truth of God for a lie” (Romans 1:25).

If you are looking for a culturally informed biblical response on the topic of same-sex marriage I recommend the follwoing message by Albert Mohler.

How should we as Christian citizens respond to the current debate in our state?

First, pray. 1 Timothy 2:1-2 instructs, “First of all, then, I urge that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for everyone, for kings and all those who are in authority, so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity.”

Second, be informed. The New Jersey Family Policy Council advocates for pro-family issues in New Jersey. You can sign up to receive their bulletins by email at njfpc.org or follow NJFPC on Facebook or Twitter.

Third, speak up. I agree with Mohler’s description of our role as Christians being “compassionate truth tellers.” Contact your state representative and voice your support for marriage. ALWAYS do with honor (1 Peter 2:17). Be bold sharing your convictions, but do so GRACEFULLY as Colossians 4:6 commands, “Your speech should always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you should answer each person.” You can find a sample letter/email is provided from the New Jersey Family Policy Council.

Finally, make much of Christ and share the good news of the gospel. It is right that we care for our state and seek its welfare (Jeremiah 29:6) by promoting pro-marriage, pro-family legislation. However, political victories (or defeats for that matter) never result in new life. This only Jesus offers, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away, and look, new things have come” 2 Corinthians 5:17.

In Acts 8:15 the Lord assures Ananias of His plans for Saul, “Go! For this man is My chosen instrument to take My name to the Gentiles, kings, and to the Israelites.” This occurs sometime between 33-36 A.D. The first missionary journey does not take place until 47-48 A.D. How was God using this time in the life of Saul/Paul to prepare him for his mission?

It was a thrill to stand shoulder to shoulder with my wife and my church family pledging to do my marriage unto Christ. I'm excited by what God will do in our families, church and community as a result of commitments made last weekend. Here's the prayer we prayed at the conclusion of the conference:
Dear Father,
I need you. I cannot love and respect like this. But I know You hear me when I ask You to help me. Forgive me where I have been unloving and disrespectful. I open my heart to You, Father. I will not be fearful nor angry at You or my spouse. I see my partner in a whole new light. I forgive my spouce. I will appreciate my partner as different not wrong. I am actually excited, Lord. Fill my heart with love and reverence for You. Ultimately, this is about You and me. It isn't about my spouse.
Thank You for this enlightenment. My greatest reward comes from doing this "unto" You.
Prepare me this day for those moments of conflict. I especially ask You to put love and respect in my heart when I feel unloved and disrespected. There is no credit for loving and respecting when it is easy. I believe You hear me. I anticipate You responding to me. I have on my heart what is on Your heart. I thank You in advance for helping me take the next step.
I believe You will reward me throughout eternity for what I do in my marriage. I believe an eternal first moment is coming in which I will be overwhelmed. Today, I renew my commitment to believe that everything I do toward my spouse matters to You. Noting is wasted. When I am loving and respectful during a conflict, this contributes to my eternal reward. Salvation is a free gift through Jesus Christ. I cannot earn this. But rewards come in response to what I do daily in the home. My eye has not seen, my ear has not heard and it has not entered my heart what You intend to do in response to my love and respect in the home. Thank You for revealing this to me. I am humbled.
I believe this brings conviction to my spouse if anything will, but I don't do it for that reason.
I believe this will influence my children. I am committed to leaving a godly legacy.
I believe this matures me and reveals my freedom of spirit. My marriage is a test and a tool.
And I believe this touches Your heart as I do this "unto You." I do this out of love and reverence for You because You love me. It's between You and me. I am a true believer. In Your Name, Amen.

Men's Gathering, Saturday, January 14th at 8:00 AM

Those of us who were at Love and Respect last week were motivated by Nehemiah’s challenge, “Do not be afraid of them (those who opposed the building of the wall around Jerusalem). Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome, and fight for your brothers, your sons, your daughters, your wives, and your homes.” (Nehemiah 4:14, ESV) We gather each month because we want to encourage each other to fight for our holiness, our family and our church.

As important as the call to fight the “good fight” is, we, especially as men, need to know when not to fight! We know our fight should not be against people (Ephesians 6:12). While we must fight for our holiness (Philippians 2:12-13) we must never fight for our salvation (Romans 3:21-22; Ephesians 2:9). This is the biblical truth is called “passive righteousness” whereby God has not only forgiven our sin, but also credited to us Jesus’ positive righteousness. At our Bible study this Saturday, January 14th (8:00-9:30 AM), we’ll take a closer look at the implications of this truth in our lives. Far from being a mere heady theological discussion, this truth affects how we view all our relationships, especially with God, our wife, and our children.

Acts 12:1-16 Questions for Discussion and Reflection

What insights does Peter’s remark in Acts 4:27 provide as to why Herod had James killed and Peter arrested?

Read Acts 12:4-6. Why did Herod go to such extraordinary lengths to secure Peter? How might the experiences of his grandfather, Herod the Great, and uncle, Herod Antipas, influence his decision? (See Matthew 2:1-15; 14:3-11.)

James is the first apostle to be martyred. This combined with the imprisonment of Peter represented a great setback for the church. Luke writes in Acts 12:5, “So Peter was kept in prison, but earnest prayer for him was made to God by the church” (ESV) How does verse emphasize the importance of prayer in the early church?

The prayer that the church engaged in was “intercessory” prayer because they appealed to God for Peter. What do the following scriptures command regarding intercessory prayer?

Stewardship of Time

In Ephesians 5:15-17 we are instructed, "Pay careful attention, then, to how you walk-- not as unwise people but as wise-- making the most of the time, because the days are evil. So don't be foolish, but understand what the Lord's will is."

As followers of Jesus we know that everything we have, including our time, is a gift from God and that we are called to be faithful stewards of all we have been given.

The Older Brother (Luke 15:25-32) Questions for Discussion and Reflection

In Luke 15:29 the older brother declares to his father, “Look, these many years I have served you, and I have never disobeyed your command, yet you never gave me a young goat, that I might celebrate with my friends.”(ESV) Evaluate this older brother’s claim with Romans 1:22-23.

Read Luke 15:1-2. Who was present when Jesus told these three parables? Who would have naturally identified with the younger (prodigal) brother? Who would have naturally identified with the older brother?

Read Luke 18:18-23. Compare the prayer of the Pharisee in this parable with the attitude of the older brother in Luke 15. What similarities are there between this Pharisee’s view of God and the older brother’s view of his father?

The prophet Micah, writing between 740 - 686 B.C. declares, "But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are too little to be among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler of Israel, whose origin is from of old, from ancient days." (Micah 5:2, ESV) When Mary and Joseph learned that she was "with child" they were living in Nazareth, 80 miles from Bethlehem.(Luke 1:26)Just how was it that Mary and Joseph made their way to Bethlehem so that this ancient prophecy might be fulfilled?

This morning we considered briefly the older brother in Jesus' Parable of the Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11-32). Not everyone rejoices when a sinner repents. Tim Keller's book, The Prodigal God: Recovering the Heart of the Christian Faith explains what the origional hearers of this parable understood Jesus to be teaching and why they grumbled at Jesus' message (Luke 15:2). I stronly recommend this book.

In John 1:45 Philip after meeting Jesus went and told his friend Nathanael, "We have found Him whom Moses in the Law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth." Nathanael skeptical, asked, “”Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip simply replied, “Come and see.” (John 1:46) Our responsibility is to invite and point to Jesus. Luke 15:20-24, "So he got up and went to his father. But while the son was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion. He ran, threw his arms around his neck, and kissed him. The son said to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and in your sight. I'm no longer worthy to be called your son.'
"But the father told his slaves, 'Quick! Bring out the best robe and put it on him; put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Then bring the fattened calf and slaughter it, and let's celebrate with a feast, because this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found!' So they began to celebrate." (HCSB)

Jesus told this parable to explain God's heart toward the sinner who repents and turns to Him. Luke 15:7, "I tell you, in the same way, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over 99 righteous people who don't need repentance."

God initiates.
Genesis 3:21, “The LORD God made clothing out of skins for Adam and his wife, and He clothed them.

God quickens.
Ephesians 2:5, “Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ,” (KJV)

God reconciles.
Colossians 1:21, And you were once alienated and hostile in mind because of your evil actions. But now He has reconciled you by His physical body through His death, to present you holy, faultless, and blameless before Him —

Our response:

Repent. “I’ll get up, go to my father…”
Matthew 3:8, “Therefore produce fruit consistent with repentance.”

Confess. “Father I have sinned against Heaven…”
1 John 1:9, “Therefore if we confess our sins He is faithful and righteous to forgive us…”

Rest. “Bring out the best robe and put it on him…”

As men, each of us have a number of titles/roles, “husband”, “employee”, “dad”, “supervisor”, “student”… By far, the most important title we have, and the one that most accurately defines our identity as followers of Jesus is “son.” Romans 8:14 declares, “All those led by God’s Spirit are God’s sons.”

Yesterday we observed the generosity of the Antioch Christians: Acts 11:29-30— "So each of the disciples, according to his ability, determined to send relief to the brothers who lived in Judea. This they did, sending it to the elders by means of Barnabas and Saul."

1. They gave voluntarily and cheerfully, “So each of the disciples…”
“Each person should do as he has decided in his heart—not reluctantly or out of necessity, for God loves a cheerful giver.” 2 Corinthians 9:7

2. They gave proportionally, “according to his ability…”

3. Their giving was purposeful and determined, “determined to send relief to the brothers who lived in Judea…”

4. Their giving was entrusted to the elders (“Storehouse giving”), “This they did, sending it to the elders by means of Barnabas and Saul.” See also Malachi 3:10; Acts 4:35, 37; and 1 Corinthians 16:2.

5. The generosity of these Christians was a mark of their spiritual growth.

“But since you excel in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness and in the love we have kindled in you—see that you also excel in this grace of giving.” 2 Corinthians 8:7 NIV

Bible teacher Gene Getz also considers the "who" these Antioch Christians sent relief to. It was the church at Jerusalem who sent Barnabas to travel to Antoch to disciple the these new Christians. Now they have the opportunity to return a blessing. Getz refers to this as "reciprocity giving."

Historians Josephus, Tacitus, and Suetonius report the drought predicted by Agabus occurred in A.D. 45-46. In addition to shortage of food, the drought caused a widespread economic downturn throughout the Roman Empire. Christians in Jerusalem and throughout Judea were hit especially hard. The offering received by Barnabas and Saul in Acts 11:30 was given as relief to these fellow Christians. The Apostle Paul continued this practice in his future missionary journeys. (Acts 24:17)

History buffs— Why is Thanksgiving Day officially observed on the fourth Thursday of November?

Early Thanksgiving celebrations in New England (1621-1676) occurred in the summer or early fall. In 1789 President George Washington's proclaimed Thanksgiving Day November 26th. More thoughts on Acts 11:23

In 1 Peter 5:2 pastors are instructed, “Shepherd God’s flock among you, not overseeing out of compulsion, but freely, according to God’s will.” This past weekend we observed the importance of shepherding, especially among new Christians by the example of Barnabas, who with Saul at his side, spent a year teaching (shepherding) the church at Antioch. (Acts 11:25) While in Antioch Barnabas “encouraged all of them to remain true to the Lord with a firm resolve of the heart” (Acts 11:23). The meaning of “encourage” (parakaleō) here includes both affirmation and exhortation.

The challenge, not just for pastors, but for all who desire to be encouragers is to know when to affirm and when to exhort. For example, there are occasions when the best way to encourage a fellow Christian following failure and sin is to remind him or her of 2 Timothy 2:12, “If we are faithless, He remains faithful, for He cannot deny Himself.” On other occasions a more appropriate scripture is James 4:8-9, “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, sinners, and purify your hearts, double-minded people! Be miserable and mourn and weep."

Immediately following the report of Barnabas’ message to the Antioch believers Luke describes Barnabas as “a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and of faith” (Acts 11:24). Finding the right balance between affirmation and exhortation requires dependence on the Holy Spirit. It also requires wisdom. Listen to this interview of Mark Driscoll where he shares his thoughts on what he calls the use of tender and tough words. Men, pay special attention to his exhortation to husbands and fathers. A communication style that makes us effective at work, or in leading a Bible study might create unwanted distance between us and our wife and children.

The New Testament word for “encouraged” in Acts 11:23 is “parakaleo” meaning “to beseech, comfort, console or admonish.” Compare this definition with the following suggested contemporary synonyms: “applaud, cheer up, rouse, boost, excite, psych up, brighten, and to give shot in arm.” How does the New Testament definition offer a more full understanding of what it means to encourage? Read 1 Thessalonians 2:12. What aspects of biblical encouragement are evident in this verse?

Barnabas, meaning, “Son of Encouragement” received this nickname from the apostles. (Acts 4:36) How did Barnabas model encouragement?

Making sense of some of the unusual laws in the Old Testament

As a new follower of Jesus I was zealous to read and understand the Bible. I remember the first time I ventured out to read the Old Testament, starting at the beginning with Genesis. To this day Genesis is one of my favorite books of the Bible. From there I continued to make my way through Exodus only to get stuck in Leviticus. Leviticus is a book full of laws such as this one—Leviticus 11:26, “The carcass of any animal which divides the foot, but is not cloven-hoofed or does not chew the cud, is unclean to you. Everyone who touches it shall be unclean.” Huh?

The Bible is clear that the worship and sacrifice laws ultimately point to and are fulfilled by the sacrifice of Jesus (Hebrews 10:1-10). The question still remains as to the purpose of the many ceremonial, cleanliness and dietary laws.

In this past weekend’s message I gave three principles to help us make sense of some of the more unusual laws in the Bible.

1. Some laws were given to a specific group of people (or person) for a specific time. (Or as my Hermeneutics professor would say, “All of the Bible is for us, but not all the Bible is to us.” For example, in Genesis 6:14 God commands Noah to build an ark— not a command that is applicable to us today. Many of the laws found in Leviticus (and repeated in Deuteronomy) were given specifically to Israel as they were about to enter the Promised Land.

2. Some laws were temporary in nature. This is exactly what caused the tension in Peter’s account of his vision in Acts 11:9, “What God has made clean, you must not call common (or unclean).”

3. Every time God gives a negative command, “Thou shall not…” it is always to protect and provide. Listen to Moses’ words in Deuteronomy 10:13, “Keep the LORD’s commands and statutes I am giving you today, for your own good.”

I’ve been helped recently by Ben Hobrink’s book, Modern Science in the Bible. A biologist who previously embraced evolution was drawn to Christ when he observed that the bible “contains knowledge that was thousands of years ahead of science.” While Hobrink does not answer every questionable law in the Bible, his insights are well worth consideration.

The idea of a "Fight Club" is certainly not original with me—God is stirring men in churches around the world to “fight the good fight of faith” (1 Timothy 6:12). Yesterday was AMAZING! A big shout out to the Calvary Chapel worship band for leading our worship and to Matthew West for sharing Sunday morning. $13,600 was given to missions, over 200 bags of food and necessities for Monmouth County families in need were donated and over 100 shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child collected. Jesus says in Matthew 5:16, “Let your light shine before men, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.” NMBC family, God was glorified yesterday by your response to the 3:16 challenge. Thank you.

The Matthew West: Story of Your Life concert last night was much more than a concert. God showed up and lives were changed. Be in prayer for those who responded last night by coming forward for prayer. Pray that last night would truly be the beginning of healing in their lives. As part of our 3:16 Challenge we're receiving a special offering this Sunday of Shoeboxes for the Samaritan's Purse Operation Christmas Child. Here are instructions on how to pack a shoebox:

1.Use an empty shoe box (standard size, please) or a small plastic container. You can wrap the box (lid separately), but wrapping is not required. Most importantly, pray for the child who will receive your gift.

2. BOY OR GIRL?

Determine whether your gift will be for a boy or a girl, and the child’s age category: 2-4, 5-9, or 10-14. Print out the appropriate boy/girl label by downloading the artwork to the right. Mark the correct age category on the label, and tape the label to the top of your box.

3:16 Challenge-- Food Drive

As part of our 3:16 Challenge we're doing a food drive to benefit the Long Branch Ronald McDonald House. Brian Thompson shared how he and Jennifer were blessed by the Ronald McDonald House when their baby boy, two days after being born required surgery. In Jeremiah 29:7 God instructs His people, "Seek the welfare of the city I have (called) you to. Pray to the Lord on its behalf..." I am grateful for the care this organization gave members of our church family and am looking forward to blessing them and the families they serve in Jesus' name.

This food drive is one of four special offerings being received on Celebration Sunday, October 16th.

This video is taken from a message given by Pastor Reggie Dabbs matched with images from the movie Most-- the story of a bridge operator who gave his young son to save a train full of passengers from an impending rail disaster. This is what God did for us.

I believe stories like this can be used in powerful ways to illustrate the gospel. Matthew 13:34 says of Jesus, (He) always used stories and illustrations like these when speaking to the crowds. In fact, he never spoke to them without using such parables" (TLB). However, one significant difference between this story and God giving His One and Only Son is that it was no accident. Revelation 13:8 describes Jesus as the Lamb "slain from the foundation of the world."

Long before God created you, He knew what it would cost to rescue us from sin. That's what John 3:16 means by, "For God SO loved the world..."

Life Book Give-A-Way

Pastor Nick and our student ministry leaders have challenged our middle school and high school students to give away hundreds of copies of the Life Book (gospels of John) to classmates and teammates the week of September 26th. In addition to giving away Life Books, our youth ministry is hosting two outreach events (next Wednesday, 9/28 and Thursday, 9/29). I'm often asked about the Bible translation I use most often when I am teaching. In seminary I was introduced to the HCSB. I appreciate it’s accuracy and clarity. This is especially the case when it comes to John 3:16. In the HCSB John 3:16 reads, "For God loved the world in this way: He gave His One and Only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life." To compliment our study we're reading together Max Lucado's book, 3:16 Numbers of Hope. Included with his book is a 40 Day Devotional. As well, several of our classes and small groups will use the Small Group Study Guide accompanies this study. Acts 9:20-31 Questions for Discussion and Reflection

Luke reports in Acts 9:20 that following his conversion to Christ Saul (Paul) “Immediately began proclaiming Jesus in the synagogues: ‘He is the Son of God.’” After leaving Damascus Paul, by his own account says that he withdrew to Arabia for nearly three years to be prepared for ministry. How is Paul’s example of “immediately proclaiming Jesus” not at odds with time set aside for discipleship and preparation for ministry? (See also 1 Timothy 3:6)

Saul’s message was Jesus is the “Son of God.” What is the significance of the title “Son of God”? 2 Samuel 7:12-16; Psalm 2:7; Matthew 8:29; 16:16; Mark 1:1; Luke 1:35; 22:70; John 1:18; 3:16; Acts 13:33-34

How were the “brothers” (Acts 9:30), Ananias, Barnabas, James and Peter (Galatians 1:18-19) indispensible to Saul’s early discipleship and preparation for ministry. My favorite thing about Family Sunday School last week was watching dads and moms talk about how to show and live the fruit of the Spirit with their children. This week's bibletoon is based on Matthew 17:20, " Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.” All of us face fear and worry... even our children. Jesus wants us put our trust (faith) in Him.

Here are the questions families will discuss following this week's bibletoon. There questions come from www.ministry-to-children.com.
1. Our world is full of fear. Why shouldn’t we be afraid? God says….
“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
- Isaiah 41:10
(God is with us no matter what fearful time we are going through.)
2. What if we don’t want to be afraid anymore. How can we stop?
“For I am the LORD, your God, who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you.” – Isaiah 41:13
(He helps us. We can’t do it on our own. He gives us His Word to hide in our hearts when we are scared, His Holy Spirit to comfort us, grown-ups who follow Jesus to help us, prayer, and friendships. Make it clear to your students that you are always there to support them and help them get over a fear.)
3. What would happen if we don’t give our fears to God?
“For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.” – Romans 8:15
(Fears tend to grow, sometimes out of control. The more you are afraid, the less you live the life that God has for you. Being afraid is like being in a prison, but God has set us free. As His children, we can trust Him because He is a good Dad.”
4. How can we trust Him? Will He really help us with our fears?
“There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.” – 1 John 4:18
(Jesus’ love for us is perfect. He showed us that by dying on the cross to rescue us from our sins. Perfect love is the only thing that can drive out all fear.)
5. What if we do learn to trust Him? What then?
“Fear the LORD, you his saints, for those who fear him lack nothing.” – Psalm 34:9
(If we trust God more than we fear the world, we show Him honor and love. This verse says that we will lack nothing. In other words, we will be given everything we need in Him. Wow! Now that’s a promise worth holding onto!)

According to Acts 5:3-4, who is the Holy Spirit? What attributes do the following Scriptures reveal about the Holy Spirit? Genesis 1:2; Psalm 139:7; Job 33:4; Matthew 12:28, 28:19; Acts 28:25; Romans 8:11; Hebrews 3:7-11 and 9:4.

Read Acts 8:14-17. In verse 17 Luke reports, “Then Peter and John laid their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.” What insight does John 4:9 provide as to the significance of Samaritan believers receiving the Holy Spirit?

Compare and contrast Acts 10:44-46 and 19:1-7 with Acts 8:14-17. What evidence in these accounts leads the reader to conclude that it was not Luke’s purpose to show how the normal relationship of the Christian with the Holy Spirit post Pentecost.

When I was a new Christian it was explained to me that the role of the Holy Spirit was to help me "live in obedience to Christ." Certainly a crucial component of a relationship with Christ is obedience. After all, Jesus Himself said, “If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.” Further, the Holy Spirit does empower us to live in obedience to Christ (Ephesians 5:18; Galatians 5:22-23). Yet a thriving relationship with Christ is much more than obedience.

This Sunday we’ll take a closer look at the Samaritans who believed the gospel, were baptized, but had not yet received the Holy Spirit (Acts 8:14-17). There experience is not one that we share in that we receive (are sealed in) the Holy Spirit when we believed the gospel (Ephesians 1:13). God’s unique purpose for these early Christians serves to showcase the relational purpose of the Holy Spirit in our lives.

Pastor and author Francis Chan has written an excellent book on the Holy Spirit entitled, The Forgotten God. In this clip he shares with his church his motivation for writing the book. Romans 8:17 tells us, “The Spirit Himself testifies together with our spirit that we are God’s children.” If your relationship with Christ has grown stale, let me encourage you to grab your Bible and spend some time meditating on Romans 8:12-17. God loves you. Don’t take my word for it… Let God tell you Himself.

Romans 6:4 reads, “Therefore, we have been buried with (Christ) through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life.” Of this Scripture, John Piper observes, “One way that our death with Christ works newness of life now is by the effect this death has on our future… Believing this is utterly crucial in experiencing the present power of Christ's resurrection in your life. Baptism is the first step of obedience for the new Christian. Matthew 28:18-19– “And Jesus came and said to them, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit...’” It is interesting to watch the reaction when one of my girls is being mischievous and I call her to stop what she is doing or is about to do and come to me. She weighs the consequences before making a decision on whether or not she will obey. Very rarely, if ever does she change her mind after taking the first step. The first step of obedience is always the hardest. I believe this is true as well in our relationship with Christ. Taking the first step does not guarantee future obedience, but it does put us in the right direction.

Perry Noble is an edgy pastor I heard for the first time a couple of years ago at a pastor's conference hosted by Thomas Road Baptist Church. While I may not endorse all this methods, on the topic of baptism I believe he’s dead on. If you've trusted Christ as your Savior and have yet to be baptized consider this challenge.

Baptism illustrates new life. The apostle Paul declares, "We were buried therefore with Him (Christ) by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life" (Romans 6:3-4). I love the picture that baptism illustrates. When Christ went into the tomb, positionally I went there with him and died to my old self. When Christ rose from the dead, I rose, too. This is the message that is proclaimed everytime a believer gets into the water to publicly declare his or her faith in Christ.

How long should a new Christian wait to be baptized? This Sunday we'll answer that question from Acts 8:26-40. Take a couple of minutes and listen to the answer John MacArthur gives to that question. Hint: My favorite qote from this clip is, "there is something I like about immediately."

Baptism illustrates repentance. While believer’s baptism is a sign given in the New Testament, it has its roots in washings prescribed by the Law as an act of confession and repentance in the Old Testament (Exodus 30:18-21). When John the baptizer arrived on the scene he came with the message of repentance, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand” (Matthew 3:2). Those baptized by John came “confessing their sins” (Matthew 3:6). The connection between baptism and repentance is why Peter responded to the conviction of the crowds in Acts 2 with the command, ‘Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit” (Acts 2:38).

Baptism illustrates that first repentance when a sinner turns from his sin to Christ. This is why there is so much joy when a fellow believer is baptized. Not only are we cheering here, but Jesus tells us there is rejoicing in the heavens, “I tell you, there is joy before the angels of God over one sinner who repents” (Luke 15:10).

Francis Chan in the clip that follows does a good job at explaining the confession and repentance that baptism symbolizes. The act of baptism does not save (Titus 3:5), but the repentance and confession it illustrates does (Romans 10:9-10). Enjoy and be challenged.

Yesterday I spoke to the effect a believer's baptism has in bringing glory to God. This was the result when Simon, who presented himself as "someone great" (Acts 8:9) witnessed true greatness in God's glory (Acts 8:13). The gospel at it's core is the good news that though we are helpless to save ourselve, God has accomplished this through Christ. Ephesians 2:10 reminds us that salvation is "not a result of works, so that no one may boast." In baptism we give testimony to the fact that we who were dead in sin (Ephesians 2:1) have now been made alive through Christ (Romans 6:4-5).

I ended the message with this quote from John Piper, "Nobody would go to the Grand Canyon to increase your sense of self-esteem. Nobody stands on the edge of the Alps or the Rockies or the Grand Canyon in order to go there to feel better about ourselves. Do you know why you go there? Because you were written to be satisfied with splendor, not self. You were created and a law written on your heart to be infinitely, eternally, fully, joyfully satisfied in a grand splendor not a great self. I plead with you lay it down. Lay down your quest for the applause of men, the approval of men, and begin to get on a quest for the one thing that will satisfy your soul -- the splendor of Jesus Christ and all that God is for you in him. I just plead with you for your own soul's infinite happiness that you will stop pursuing it in the wrong place … We have an invincibly triumphant savior - Jesus Christ. Don't turn away from him to yourself. Don't want praise for you; give praise to him. Know him; he'll satisfy you.”

Simon is initially identified as a magician or sorcerer. A magician in this context can be defined as one who performs or seeks spiritual or supernatural acts apart from God. To what is this kind of magic or sorcery compared to in Scripture? (1 Samuel 15:23; Jeremiah 14:14; Ezekiel 13:6-9; 2 Kings 17:17; and Revelation 21:8)

Why, according to James 3:13-18, is spirituality apart from God offensive to God? (See also Romans 1:24-25)

Saturday we had a giant BBQ outreach yesterday gave out about 200 hotdogs to the people from the neighourood. the idea was to offer something free to the people and have an opportunity to talk about spiritual things. What an awesome view to see people sit at the tables with members from the team talking with them, listening to them and sharing Christ. Some people we have been seeing in the past month - either from the door to door we do every week or from the monthly kids club - came and it was just the time to strengthen the relationship and share more.

Pray for Hem Outreach

On Sunday we prayed for NMBC mission partner Christophe Savage who is hosting the Kid's Club and BBQ Outreach this week in Hem, France. On Monday 25 children took part in the club. As well, team members took to the streets sharing the gospel. On Tuesday most of the children returned and some brought along friends. The team was especially impacted by open and honest way the children talked about their spiritual interests and need.

Pray that God uses this honesty to lead these children and their families to repentance and faith in Jesus. Pray as well, that those who recieve invitations to the BBQ will attend and have open hearts to the message. (Ephesians 1:18)

Stephen was accused of plotting to destroy the temple and “customs that Moses handed down” (Acts 6:14). Read Acts 7:1-50. What individuals and events does Stephen use for his defense? Why are these significant in light of the accusations made against Stephen?
